The U.S. Bank Shopper Cash Rewards™ Visa Signature® Credit Card is our top pick for best credit card for extended warranty. With no annual fee, you get extended coverage, plus rewards that you can customize to match your purchases from your favorite retailer.
Citi is an advertising partner.
How many times have you had an item stop working or break just days or weeks after the manufacturer’s warranty ends? The next time this happens, check to see if your credit card includes an extended warranty benefit. This benefit may give you up to an additional year of coverage for eligible items purchased with the card. With many cards offering up to $50,000 in coverage per year, this one benefit could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in a year.
Not all credit cards offer extended warranties, and there are exclusions, so not everything with a warranty will be eligible. Also, you need to have paid for the item with the credit card, and your account must be in good standing at the time you make a claim on the extended warranty.

In recent years, many issuers have reduced additional card benefits, such as extended warranty and return and purchase protections. Some, like Discover, completely removed the benefits altogether. However, there are still some issuers, including American Express, Capital One and Chase, that provide extended warranty protection on many of their credit cards.

An extended warranty does just what its name implies: It extends the term of the warranty. This extension generally adds a year. In some cases where the warranty is less than a year, the extended warranty will double the time — a six month warranty will double to 12 months.
Many retailers offer extended warranties on purchases, especially electronics. Do these offer better coverage than what your credit card is offering? It depends. You need to understand your credit card’s benefits as well as that of the one you’re considering. If the coverage is nearly identical, then your credit card’s extended warranty should be sufficient.
Just remember, stores wouldn’t be selling these warranties if they were losing money on them. The chance that you’ll need to file a claim on a defective purchase is relatively small so in many cases the manufacturer’s warranty plus the extended warranty from your credit card will suffice.
Generally a credit card’s extended warranty mirrors that of the original manufacturer’s warranty. Let’s say your credit card offers an extra one year of coverage. If your new laptop is protected against defective materials and workmanship for one year, then after that year is over, the extended warranty would do the same for an additional 12 months.
Some items that may be covered include:
The issuer of your card can give you further details on what is and isn’t covered via phone or their website.
Most credit cards that offer extended warranties that offer up to $10,000 per claim and a maximum of $50,000 per cardholder. You can call the number on your credit card to find out exact coverage details for your credit card.
There are also usually numerous items excluded from coverage. Most, such as pets and beauty products, don’t come with warranties to begin with. Also, shipping and handling costs won’t be reimbursed.
Here are the common items that don’t qualify for purchase protection:
In addition to excluded items, certain types of circumstances that caused the damage are often excluded:
You have several ways to file an extended warranty claim: calling your bank, submitting a claim form online or mailing a claim form. When filing a claim, you’ll need the original receipt, original manufacturer’s warranty, credit card statement showing your purchase and damaged product. Your card issuer may also request additional documentation, such as a repair estimate.
Not likely — your card issuer may require you to ship the eligible item to a specific location where it’ll be inspected. Your card issuer will provide reimbursement for the shipping cost.
